Texas A&M head coach Joni Taylor has secured a major addition to her roster for the upcoming 2024-25 season. On Friday, former LSU guard Alexis Morris announced her commitment to the Aggies after entering the transfer portal earlier this month.
Morris, a 5-foot-6 junior, played a key role in LSU’s success over the past two seasons under head coach Kim Mulkey. In 2023-24, she averaged 12.8 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals per game while shooting 38% from three-point range.
Her tenacious defense and clutch scoring helped lead the Tigers to a 28-3 record and a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Instant Impact for the Aggies
Coach Taylor expressed her excitement about adding Morris to the Texas A&M backcourt.
“Alexis is a proven winner and competitor who will make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor,“ Taylor said in a statement.
Her experience playing in big games and her ability to create for herself and her teammates will be invaluable to our team.
Morris will join a talented Aggies squad that finished 22-10 last season and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. She is expected to slide into the starting point guard role vacated by graduating senior Kayla Wells.
Thriving in the Transfer Portal Era
The addition of Morris demonstrates Coach Taylor’s ability to navigate the increasingly important transfer portal. Since taking over at Texas A&M in 2022, Taylor has landed several high-impact transfers, including Destiny Pitts (Minnesota) and Aaliyah Patty (Ohio State).
We’re always looking for players who fit our culture and can help us compete for championships, Taylor said. “The transfer portal allows us to fill specific needs and bring in experienced players who can contribute right away.”
Building a Championship Contender
With Morris in the fold, Texas A&M appears poised to make a deep run in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The Aggies return several key players, including leading scorer Sahara Jones (15.2 ppg) and defensive stalwart Sydnee Roby (8.1 rpg, 2.3 bpg).
“I’m excited to be part of something special at Texas A&M,“ Morris said.
Coach Taylor has built a winning culture here, and I can’t wait to compete for championships with my new teammates.
As the transfer portal continues to reshape the college basketball landscape, coaches like Joni Taylor who can successfully recruit and integrate talented transfers will have a major advantage.
With the addition of Alexis Morris, the Aggies have once again positioned themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the SEC and beyond.
